The 2014 Super Bowl is about to kick off another record-breaking year. We can expect the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks to deliver a game on the field, but what about online? Last year, we saw the surge of the Digital Super Bowl that generated 24.1 million tweets, according to research tracked by Visible Technologies. As the excitement builds, employees are constantly active online before the game to keep up to date on news media, discussions and place bets on their favourite team. After the game, many are rewinding back on YouTube to watch the memorable plays, performances and of course, commercials. Now all of this will be easily accessible on mobile because for the first year ever, the NFL’s mobile app will be available to all smartphone users.

At work, an employee’s productivity will shift from their job to the Super Bowl. Not only does it affect productivity, it also raises the issue of security – Remember last year when the Federal Reserve spent their Super Bowl getting hacked? Spreadsheets filled with data of bankers’ login credentials and contacts were stolen. Or the time NFL’s Miami Dolphins was hacked during Super Bowl XLI? Visitors on the site were automatically infected by a Trojan keylogger that gives hackers full access to their computer.
