How did I get here?

I’ve always been a quiet and reluctant kind of guy. Being in grade 12 and having to choose what I would be studying at university for the next four years was not an easy decision. I did not know which particular area of study I wanted to be in and that scared me (like I’m sure it does for many of you reading this). However, the decision that I ended up making has changed my life, and I am so grateful because of it.

Let me first start off by introducing myself to you.

My name is Anthony and I am now entering my fourth year at Carleton University, doing a double concentration in Marketing and Information Systems. I also have a co-op option which lets me work with real companies in my fields of study.

So, how did I get to where I am today?

I was the first in my family to attend university, so the decision was made primarily on my own. I have also lived in Ottawa my whole life and I knew that I wanted to stay here. To keep this blog short, I want to share with you one thing that made the decision to choose Carleton that much easier – co-op. Carleton’s co-op program is very unique because it teaches you how you can get the job you want, not just a temporary job that pays well. Using what I learned from my studies, I was able to land various jobs which have taught me practical, real-world skills. I was never the smartest student in my class, and I still don’t hold that title today, but my co-op experience has really made me and my resume stand out from the crowd.

The quiet and reluctant guy that I always knew has changed during my time at Carleton. I feel like I have found potential in myself that I never knew was there, and this has made me enjoy life so much more. The Carleton community always had its arms wide open for me and offered so many great ways to get involved. Honestly, you can’t find better university clubs/societies and events anywhere else! I recently built up the courage to apply for an executive role with the Sprott Information Systems Students’ Association (SISSA) and got it! Since then, a professor has also asked me to be a guest speaker for her class, and the Sprott School of Business has asked me to be their designated blogger for Carleton – two places I definitely never thought I would be in when thinking about my future in grade 12.

It’s been such a great journey, and I’m glad I will get to share it with all of you. Thanks for reading and stay in touch for more stories!

See you soon,

Anthony
