Let’s admit it, it’s hard not to check our phones every minute or so. Even during classes, a push notification will tempt you to pick up your phone. But I don’t blame you, there are so many apps available and information to search for online. So why not use it to our advantage? Here is my list of the top eight most useful apps for school:

  • Dropbox

There will be many group projects at school where you will need to share files amongst your colleagues (some of which are too big to send through email). This is a great app to store, transfer and share all of your files online.

  • Evernote

The best way to access your notes, photos and voice memos on a mobile device. You can type your notes on your laptop and it will transfer them automatically to your phone/tablet in the blink of an eye. Notes are searchable with tags, and Evernote even recognizes the text in photos (for example, if you took a photo of the blackboard).

  • CU Mobile

Carleton has a really great app for current students called CU Mobile. Students at Carleton can use this app as a one-stop-shop to access their course timetables, student accounts, grades, and more. Note, Carleton also offers a great app for prospective students called Carleton Admissions.

  • Facebook

A Facebook group is one of the best methods for doing group work. You can use Facebook groups as a collaborative tool to discuss what needs to be done, share progress updates and upload documents.

  • Graphing Calculator

Along with an expanded scientific calculator, the Graphing Calculator app enables you to graph multiple equations and email the results. This app is very useful when you don’t have a pen or paper on hand and want to check the results of your equations.

  • Ottawa Transit

This is one of my most used apps for school (and outside of school). Ottawa Transit lists real-time route information/arrival times for every bus in Ottawa. You should use this to plan ahead for catching a bus or the O-Train in order to get to your classes and exams on time.

  • Candy Crush Saga

Sometimes it helps to take a break from your studies. Work and study hard, but don’t forget to also enjoy your time at university. There’s a lot to learn at university, in what I feel has been a short period of time, so taking breaks is important.

The toughest challenge for me when entering university for the first time was the motivation to start projects and stay on track. I found these eight apps extremely helpful for completing tasks and managing my time effectively. I hope they do the same for you!

Thanks for reading. See you soon,

Anthony
