A 10-point Checklist for Your First Year of University

As I began my fourth year of university, I noticed how much easier it was for me to jump start the school year. This comfort level increased considerably from my first year and it all started with a 10-point checklist.

1) Take a tour of the campus

One of my favourite things about Carleton is its campus. It is extremely helpful to familiarize yourself with the campus map and to find out where all of your classes are located. Even if you know where they generally are, take a walk around campus and find the best routes to your classes. It is also helpful to book a tour of the campus in order to understand what is housed in each building.

2) Learn to use the library

Learning how to use the library and its resources will help you ace your assignments!

3) Pack snacks

Open a pack of gum, and suddenly everyone becomes your best friend. Bringing snacks with you to class, especially during the first week, is a great way to start up conversations with your new classmates.

4) Bring noise-cancelling earphones

Sometimes it’s good to isolate yourself from your surroundings and let your thoughts run. Whether you’re walking around campus or studying at the library, noise-cancelling earphones will be your best friend. It’s often loud when you’re walking around the hallways or when nearby students are working on group projects, so having a good set of noise-cancelling earphones will go a long way.

5) Secure a locker

It can be tough to carry all of your books and belongings with you between classes. To help with this problem, register a locker as soon as the semester begins. Registering for a locker early can help you secure a spot that is near the majority of your classes.

6) Set up a calendar

Setting up an organized calendar is very important. The Carleton University Students’ Association hands out free calendars and planners all year long! You can use these to plan your tuition payments, assignment deadlines and a list of events you want to attend.

7) Bring a notebook

During the first week of classes, professors usually review the syllabus and mention important details about the course and its material. However, some professors also start lecturing on the first day of classes, so make sure to bring a notebook!

8) Check Facebook

There are a number of Carleton University Facebook groups. These social networks are great for making friends on campus and staying up-to-date with campus events and activities.

9) Get involved in campus clubs

One of the most beneficial experiences for me was getting involved in campus clubs. Not only does this help to enhance your resume, but it also helps you step outside your comfort zone and meet new friends.

10) Take a break

Once in a while, it is important to take a break from your studies – grab a cup of coffee, attend an on-campus event and share some stories with your new friends and classmates.

I hope this checklist helps you jump start your school year.

Talk to you soon!

Anthony
