I was once in your position. Like you, I was faced with the difficult decision of what I wanted to study at university for the next four years. Here are some tips that helped me in making a smooth transition to university.
The first step is to think about which subjects interest you. Next, talk to your guidance counsellor and do some research to learn more about the range of careers available in those fields. If you don’t see a career that interests you, don’t worry. Simply choose a field that you want to learn more about.
Remember that the program you decide on should make you happy. Family and friends are great resources for weighing your program options; however, it should be you who ultimately makes the final decision.
Since enrolling at Carleton, I have changed my program twice. Throughout the process, I have learned a lot about myself and the things I enjoy. I knew that as long as I had an idea of what I wanted to do, the world would adapt to me. I can now say that I have found a field of study that I am truly passionate about and a future career path that excites me.
To those students who are nervous about starting university, know that when you choose a field that interests you, everything will eventually fall into place. Being patient was the most important mindset for helping me stay on track. At university, you learn something new every single day. So, be patient and enjoy the journey!
All the best,
Anthony
